Diaryland Has Chastened Me: Catching up on Vegas and Louis

I logged into Diaryland today, and one page told me it had been 65 days since I updated my diary. That's way longer than I ever intended, but somehow life creeps up on me every once in a while. Let's see - where did I leave off?

Rob and I had a wonderful trip to Las Vegas. We stayed at the Alladdin, which will soon become a Planet Hollywood casino (blech!) We dined well, we drank well, we saw the Bellagio fountains, we people watched, we gambled...and Rob loved it. We'll make Vegas a weekend getaway in the future.

Unfortunately, the week after we got back, I got a call that my stepmother's cousin Louis had had a heart attack and died. It was truly an amazing story. His wife Joyce had recently had cataract surgery, and they were going from her doctor's appointment to visit their daughter at her office. While on Interstate 30, right near downtown Dallas, Joyce realized that they weren't moving anymore. She realized that Louis was in trouble, so she started CPR. A tractor trailer driver saw that something was happening and protected their car from being hit. When the paramedics were removing him from the car, everyone became aware that the car was still in gear because it started moving forward. Louis had his foot on the brake the whole time. Doctors have said that that's an amazing feat, having such control during a heart attack that he could protect his wife. I just heard of another family friend who died while driving, except he had his foot on the gas instead. His wife had extreme injuries and has spent a month in the hospital. It makes me tear up a little just thinking about Louis's concern for Joyce in his dying moments.

The memorial service weekend was actually really pleasant, although my stepsister Lauren caused a bit of a stir with her decision to drink a lot. She has finally admitted, weeks afterward, that she was not dealing with Louis's death well. She's had a hard year herself, but it was still a bit unforgivable how unpleasant she was.

Since then, I've been pretty busy. Rob has been working a lot. He's out of town right now for two weeks. It's great that he's so busy with his business, and truthfully, it's the perfect time for me to have some solitude. My work load isn't as bad as some semesters, but I do have a lot to do in about three weeks (AACK!) I'd better get back to it.
